Imagine that you’re curled up on the sofa, scrolling through Instagram, when a sleek ad catches your eye. A glamorous woman casually mentions turning a few hundred pounds into thousands with a little-known investment secret.
It feels like a shortcut to that dream handbag, renovation, or financial freedom. However, that ad might be the most expensive thing you ever click on. The FTC reported $1.9 billion in scam losses in 2024, so you need to be aware to avoid becoming part of that figure.
Why Women Are in the Crosshairs
Women are not gullible or easier targets. However, they are more likely to engage with content that promises security, stability, and a better future for their families. According to data from the US Federal Trade Commission, Americans lost at least $2.1 billion to social media scams in 2025. Investment scams accounted for over half of that, and women are targeted at significantly higher rates.
The FBI also reported that losses from “pig butchering” scams exceeded $3.9 billion globally in 2025 alone. That’s where fraudsters build fake relationships before introducing investment pitches.
The Anatomy of an Instagram Investment Scam
So how does this actually play out on your feed?

Phase One
It usually starts with an ad or a direct message. The ad might feature a celebrity endorsement (fake, obviously) or a “free masterclass” from a famous investor. The deepfake videos are now so realistic that they can mimic the voice and mannerisms of well-known public figures perfectly. Also, the DM might be from an entrepreneur who accidentally messaged you.
The profile looks authentic with plenty of photos, a believable backstory, and posts that suggest a glamorous life. Scammers often “farm” these accounts for months, buying fake followers and engagement to create an illusion of authority and popularity.

Phase Two
Over days or weeks, the scammer builds rapport. They ask about your day, your dreams, your worries. Also, they share personal stories. If it’s a romance scam, they might tell you they’re looking for something real. If it’s a pure investment pitch, they position themselves as a mentor who “wants to help you achieve financial freedom”.
They are patient, and this phase can last anywhere from a week to three months.

Phase Three
Casually, they mention how well their investments are doing. They share screenshots of profits and invite you to try a “special” platform they’ve discovered. Then, you make a small deposit of perhaps £200 or £500.
You can even withdraw a small amount to prove it’s real, which acts as the hook.

Phase Four
You invest more, encouraged by your success. Perhaps you take out a loan, or dip into your savings. When you try to withdraw your money, you’re hit with fees, compliance holds, or verification requirements that demand even more deposits.
Eventually the platform vanishes, the scammer disappears, and your money is gone.
How to Protect Yourself
You don’t need to delete Instagram or become a cybersecurity expert. You just need a few online safety tips that will help you avoid the scams.
- Question the source. Before you engage with any investment opportunity, do a quick search. Type the company’s name followed by “scam” or “complaint” into Google.
- Guard your inbox. Adjust your privacy settings so that only people you follow can send you direct messages. The single step eliminates the vast majority of unsolicited scam approaches.
- Trust your gut. If something feels off, it probably is. Scammers are experts at making you feel special, but they’re not your friends.
- Report suspicious activity. If you see a dodgy ad or receive a suspicious DM, report it to Instagram. You can also report it to your local fraud reporting centre.
- Talk about it. The shame and embarrassment that often follow a scam are exactly what the fraudsters count on. However, sharing our experiences makes the community smarter.
