DIY Port Day Itineraries: How to Explore Historic Cities Without Group Tour Chaos

A group excursion means rushing to meeting points and sticking to fixed schedules, all while you move at someone else’s pace. That’s true even when the historic city center is a short walk away from the ship.

A DIY itinerary skips all of that. When you do it yourself, you pick the places you want to see and plan your day around that instead.

Ultimately, you want to choose your stops well enough to leave room to relax so you enjoy your visit. Otherwise, you end up running after other people and frantically trying to see as much as you can.

Start With Your Port Day Time Limit

Before you can pick a single attraction, you need to know how many hours you have in port.

From there, look at whether the city center is walkable or if you’ll need public transport to get there quickly.

Sometimes, the museum has a long line or the landmark on your must-see list is closed for an event. Having a backup plan nearby means you don’t have to stand around deciding what to do next if something doesn’t go to plan.

You should also plan for your non-negotiable stop first. Then, treat everything else as if it’s optional (because it is!). A flexible itinerary works better than a packed one. And, it actually helps you to get the most out of limited port time.

Enjoy the City Without Watching the Clock

When you’ve designed your own itinerary, you also need to give yourself permission to enjoy it. Rather than feeling like you’re missing out, remind yourself that having enough time to linger over lunch is the advantage over taking a crowded group tour.
