10 Things to Do in Chesapeake This Fall

October is the month in which the city of Chesapeake ceases to feel like a sauna. The atmosphere becomes dry, the leaves change color, a little bit later than others, but still they do, and one may spend time outside without any regret.

So what do you do with that? If you’ve been typing fun things to do in Chesapeake va into your phone, you’ve probably seen lists that are either all festivals or all hiking. This one’s a mix. Some of it’s free, some costs a little, and a few things only happen this time of year.

On timing, the colors usually peak around mid October and can hang on into November. Weather decides the rest.

Quick heads up before we start. Hours and dates for fall stuff change every year, so check before you drive out. Nothing worse than showing up to a locked gate.

  1. The canal trail

Begin with this one if you’re looking for an easy option. The Dismal Swamp Canal Trail is smooth, straight, and eight miles in length, thus enabling children, grandparents, and bikers to all use it. This trail follows the route of the Dismal Swamp Canal, which is known to be the oldest man-made waterway in the United States. Isn’t that impressive for a canal?

There’s a giant carved bear at the trailhead named Chessie. Everybody takes a picture with it, and you will too. Birds love this area as well. Over 200 kinds have been seen along the trail, so if you’ve got binoculars collecting dust, now’s the time.

  1. Northwest River Park

This park is 763 acres, which is a lot of woods. There’s a long wooden boardwalk over the river and trails that go on for miles. In fall the whole place smells like leaves and wet dirt.

Wear footwear you do not care about. The trails get muddy after rain. Reach early if you could. Fewer people, better light, and you might see an eagle if you get lucky.

  1. Pumpkins and corn mazes

You knew this was coming. Chesapeake has a few farms that go all out in the fall. Farms like Mount Pleasant and Historic Greenbrier both conduct fall festivals, and you will explore corn mazes, small animal parks, and tractor rides.

Is it a little touristy? Sure. Do it anyway. Weekdays are calmer, weekends in October get packed, and if you’ve got kids you already know picking a pumpkin takes forty minutes because nobody can agree on one.

  1. Restaurant Week

Chesapeake Restaurant Week usually lands in October. Restaurants put together special menus at set prices, and in recent years those started around $15, which is a nice deal if you’ve been eyeing a place that’s normally too pricey for a regular Tuesday.

Look at the participating list early. The popular spots book up fast, and you’ll end up eating dinner at 4:30 or not at all.

  1. The Arboretum

The Chesapeake Arboretum is 48 acres of trails and gardens, right inside the city. You can walk it in under an hour, or go slow and read the little signs on the trees,

It’s the one to pick on a day when you want to be outside but don’t feel like a hike. Wear whatever. Nobody cares. And if you take your time, it’s easy to spend a whole afternoon wandering from one garden to the next.

  1. Battlefield Park

This is where the Battle of Great Bridge happened in 1775, which people call Virginia’s first Revolutionary War victory on land. There’s a loop trail of about a mile along the Intracoastal Waterway, a marsh overlook, and a small museum on the grounds.

You don’t have to be a history person. The walk is nice by itself, and the marsh looks good in fall light. Read the signs along the way though. They make the walk better.

  1. Boat watching at Great Bridge Lock Park

Here’s something I didn’t know until I looked it up. In fall, lots of boats head south along the Intracoastal Waterway, and some of them come from as far as Maine. At Great Bridge Lock Park you can stand there and watch them get through the locks.

There’s an elevated walkway over the Elizabeth River too. Grab a coffee, lean on the rail, and watch for a while. Weirdly relaxing. It also costs you nothing but time, which is a nice change.

  1. A local fall festival

Chesapeake packs in a few big events every fall, like the wine festival and the Sheriff’s Oyster and South Festival, which is all you can eat. Those get crowded, so buy tickets early if they need them.

If you’re after events in Chesapeake VA this weekend, the city’s tourism calendar is the easiest place to start. The small stuff pops up all the time too. Church fall festivals, trunk or treats, that kind of thing. You’ll find those on local community pages and social media.

  1. Paddling

Leaves look different from the water. You can paddle the Northwest River, or if you want something a little wilder, Lake Drummond inside the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge.

No kayak? Look for a rental or a guided trip first. And check the wind. Open water on a windy day is miserable.

  1. Oak Grove Lake Park

Lake, a walking path, dragonflies and butterflies if it is warm weather, many different birds, and a view of the lake from a high place. Local people exercise here and walk their dogs, so do not be surprised to see a dog playing. Great place if your weekend is busy but you want to spend some time outdoors.

If it rains

Rain happens, even in October. If it does, don’t cancel the whole weekend. Restaurant Week works in any weather. The little museum at Battlefield Park is indoors. Some festivals run under tents. And a drizzly walk through the Arboretum is nicer than you’d think, because the leaves look brighter and wet and nobody else is there.

So where do you start?

You won’t cover all ten in one weekend. Pick one outdoor thing, one food thing, and one why-not thing. Maybe the canal trail on Saturday, a Restaurant Week dinner that night, and a pumpkin patch on Sunday.

That’s about as good as fun things to do in Chesapeake va get in October. Pick two or three, go, and save the rest for next weekend.
